Recently some girlfriends and I had brunch at one of the hottest new cafes in Melbourne, Matcha Mylkbar.
Cafes do not get much cooler than this. Located in the heart of St Kilda's food and lifestyle district, Matcha Mylkbar boasts some of the prettiest, tastiest and well thought out vegan menus I've ever seen. They've even thrown in a pun or twenty to get the conversation flowing matcha easier at brunch. (I am terrible at puns, I am so sorry!)
Disclaimer - I am not vegan, nor are the girls I went with, in fact we are all quite heavy meat eaters, but like most of Melbourne we had seen so many great posts about Matcha Mylkbar that we were willing to sacrifice the side of bacon to try a soy version.
We started off with a sampling of Matcha Mylkbar's infamous Flight mini lattes. The four flavours we received were Matcha, Mushroom, Carrot and Blue Algae.
Firstly, let me just say they looked super pretty in their mini skull latte glasses and bright coloured liquids. Flavour wise, look I am probably not going to be rushing out to grab a blue algae latte anytime soon, but it was very interesting to try, I definitely suggest everyone giving it a go. It wasn't awful, just kind of sour and sweet. Likewise with the mushroom latte. It wasn't terrible, more of an acquired taste. I was actually quite surprised by the Carrot Latte. It was really nice, almost a bit soy chai tasting and of coarse the Matcha Latte was delish.
Following the latte sample we each ordered a smoothie or juice, which were served in a larger version of skull glass mug, soo cute and very Instagramable! I opted for the ever so cute "HOLY STRAWBERRIES BATMAN, WE’RE IN A JAM" smoothie, which tasted just as yummy as it looked!
When it came to ordering food, we almost all ended up with the Matcha Pancakes, but decided that wouldn't make for a great photo, plus we should probably sample as much of the menu as possible! So we ended up with a mix of Matcha Pancakes, Beachside fruit bowl, Vegan Salmon and eggs (yep vegan eggs and salmon, you must try!) and of coarse I went for the Soy Chicken Burger.
If I didn't know I was at a plant based cafe, I would have sworn it was a real chicken burger! The crispy crumbed chicken paired with zesty beetroot kraut and sweet matcha tea bun was a match made in matcha heaven! The burger was nestled along side the crispiest sweet potato fries, I could've eaten a whole bowl of those alone!
The whole experience was incredible. The staff were attentive and explained anything we weren't sure on and they will even offer recommendations if you're really stuck. The cute names on the menu had us trying dishes and drinks that we probably would never have attempted before. The decor was modern, urban and fresh, and perfect for taking those foodie photos! And the best part is nobody looked twice as we all stood to take the illusive aerial shot of our meals.
If you are planning on heading over on a weekend, be prepared for a little bit of a wait, it is a very popular spot. But don't stress, they have a great system in place and keep you update with texts so you know when a table is ready. We went at around 11am on a Sunday and were quoted one hour, we were seated and ordering within 40 minutes, perfect!
After finally experiencing Matcha Mylkbar for myself, I can officially say, I get why there is so matcha hype around this place. But don't take my word for it, head down and try for yourself. ( I promise I'm done with the puns now, I'll leave it to the pros! )
