If you're like me and money does not grow on a tree in your backyard, the decision to invest in a designer handbag can be a daunting one. So, I thought I would share a few tips and tricks that I like to follow for picking the perfect piece that will having you feeling like you are getting value for your money!
STEP 1 - SET A BUDGET
Just because you are buying a designer piece, does not mean you have to spend $6000, but by all means if that is within your budget, go for it! There are plenty of beautiful pieces and designers with a more comfortable price tag attached that are just as special as the more lavishly priced pieces.
It all depends on what fits into your personal budget.
My most recent handbag purchase was definitely the most extravagantly priced, but there was a lot of saving and deliberating leading up to it and I couldn't be more sure that this was the perfect bag for me and that I am going to get a lot of wear out of it.
STEP 2 - CHOOSE A STYLE
We all know the "IT" bags that almost every fashionista we follow carries each season, the Givenchy Antigona, the Celine Luggage handbag, the Gucci Disco bag etc etc But just because it is the "IT" bag of the season, does not necessarily mean it will be practical for you. For example, I have a lot of back/joint issues so I prefer smaller shoulder bags, cross body bags or clutches over larger handle bags or bags you carry on the crook of your arm. Size wise I like them to be big enough to fit my giant phone and a water bottle in, but not so large that it looks like I live in my handbag!
STEP 3 - PICK A COLOUR/PRINT THAT SUITS YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE
If you are somebody who wears a lot of prints, maybe opt for a more simple coloured bag that won't clash with all the pretty prints you wear and vice versa. Or hey, if you love to clash prints, get a print! Whatever suits your personal style. For me I tend to always opt for black. I've always worn black and find it goes with everything, colours, prints, denim etc. Black never seems to go out of fashion.
Alternatively, find a bag that is versatile and can be changed to suit any occasion like this Furla bag. The lid is detachable and comes in many different colours and materials, the options are endless!
STEP 4 - ASK YOURSELF, "WILL I STILL LOVE THIS BAG IN 5 YEARS?"
5 years is probably stretching the bag love to its max for some, but if you are going to invest a decent amount of money into a bag, wouldn't you want to love it for years and years? I don't know about you, but sometimes I will see a new season Gucci and just die of lust for it! Current Annabell is screaming, "GET IT! GET IT! GET IT! YOU MUST HAVE THIS BAG NOW!!" But then I think of future Annabell and I know she probably won't be so into a rhinestone and pearl, glitter tiger covered hot pink bag in 6 months time, let alone 5 years. So instead of impulsively maxing out my credit card and regretting it later, I lust over it in silence until it passes, and then do it all over again next season when more new goodies are released!
Again, for me, I know I always have and always will love silver stud detailing, so if I want something a little more glitzy than a plain black bag, I know I can go for something with studs and I will love it just as much in 5 years as I do now.
The below bag I have had for over 6 years and boy is she loved!
There you have it! Hopefully after following these 4 steps you will have successfully picked your new handbag and have absolutely no regrets that you will love it forever!
