For months now I have been wanting to do a juice cleanse but had no idea where to start or what they actually involved. Just before I left for Vegas I did a little bit of digging and that’s when I found all the answers and support I was looking for in the lovely souls over at Greene Street Juice Co.
I have always had tummy troubles of some kind. I have so many food intolerances that over the last 2 years I have really ignored, which has caused my gut health to really deteriorate. Just before my trip my tummy trouble was at its' worst. I was permanently bloated (I seriously looked almost pregnant everyday, especially after eating), my tummy reacted terribly to almost any food I put into it, I had zero energy, always craved junk or sweets and my skin had broken out like a pubescent teen again. I was so uncomfortable in my own skin, so I knew it was time to do something about it.
After having a chat to the lovely team at Greene Street about why I wanted to do a cleanse and about my intolerances/tummy issues, they recommended a 5 day fructose friendly cleanse for my first time, that would be gentle on my stomach but still have the desired effect.
I’ll admit, I whimped out a bit and opted for a 3 day cleanse as I honestly didn’t think I’d survive 5 days without solid food! (When I do it next, I will definitely do the full 5 days)
Each day consisted of 8 juices/elixirs to be consumed in intervals throughout the day/night.
Upon waking I had the first elixir Gotham City, which basically tasted like lemon water. So far so good, this was going to be easy!
Half an hour later I had my first smoothie. Tasted just like a banana smoothie and made me feel decently full as if I had eaten a normal breakfast.
On Day 1 I had a full day of work, I was a little nervous as my days can be very intense and I can do a lot of running around, so I thought I would be starving.
By my first 15min break it was time for my 3rd juice. I’m going to be totally honest here, this was my least favourite. I literally could barely swallow it. But more so because it was so sweet. I only drank half and then opted to nibble on a few carrot sticks instead. (Snacking on raw veggies is totally fine in the cleanse if your body feels it needs food)
Lunch time came and I was feeling a bit pekish. Lunch was another smoothie, everyone at work agreed it smelt amazing (it tasted great too!) after this I was feeling really full again.
By my last break I wasn’t even hungry (massive surprise to me! Usually I’m reaching for the Twirl chocolates at the 3pm mark) but I had my 5th juice anyway. It was a refreshing elixir. More veggie based but I don’t mind that taste.
I survived a full day at work on just my juice (and carrot sticks)! When I got home from work I had another protein based smoothie.
Before dinner was another light juice. By now my belly did feel like it was just full of liquid sloshing around.
Last but not least the final ”juice” of the day was a soup. It was a nice change to have something hot, made me feel like I was actually eating dinner.
Overall after Day 1 I was pleasantly surprised with how much easier it was that I had thought. Snacking on raw veggies and nuts helped. I did think about food a lot today, but didn’t feel physically hungry for it. Just my mind was! My biggest surprise was with how settled my tummy was. Usually I always have a bloated stomach after work from whatever I’d eaten.
Today I had a day off, which I was kind of happy about because day 2 was slightly tougher!
Day 2 I realised that I definitely snack out of boredom and convenience. Just because the snacks are there, I’m not actually hungry for them. So we decided to get out of the house for a bit, less temptation.
The juices were all the same as day one. I brought a few with me as we went out with the dogs for the day. I will admit I left juice #3 at home because I really didn’t like it, but had my trusty carrot sticks again instead (is that cheating? Probably. Oops!) If we are being totally honest, juice #3 did not get drunk again at all this cleanse haha.
Day 2 was quite an active day. I went for 2 very long walks and ran around the park with the pups, Pilates & some strength training. In between my juices I tried to drink plenty of water and green tea as recommended by GSJ. Hydration is key!
By the end of Day 2 I did feel slightly tired, but I had done quite a bit of exercise that day so I wasn’t too worried.
(Still thinking about burgers)
Another full day at work.
Juices went the same as Day 1&2. I was definitely thinking about food a lot by today. Like, ALOT. But again more so the action of eating than actually feeling hungry for it.
By the end of Day 3 I was honestly so bloody happy that my tummy troubles had not occurred at all over the last 3 days! I had a noticeably less bloated tummy and my skin was the clearest its been in a year!
Yes, I know what you’re thinking, “I thought this was only a 4 day cleanse?” It was. But it was what I did on Day 4 that I wanted to share. On Day 4 I royally fucked up (pardon my French, but it’s called for).
Day 4 I was so happy with myself that I had completed this juice cleanse and was feeling so great, I decided to celebrate with a big fat greasy burger and fries.. Big mistake, big big big mistake!
I was so unwell that night and the next morning. I was so annoyed at myself for undoing all that amazing work from the juice cleanse. It made me realise just how important it is to listen to your body and be mindful of what we are putting into it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying “Don’t eat burgers or fried food”, you guys know how much I love my burgers! But for me personally, someone who knows I have food intolerances to gluten and dairy and also have a sensitive stomach at the moment from illness, I should be listening to my body and fuelling it with foods that will be gentle and nourishing, not greasy and irritating.
It has been one week since my cleanse and I can honestly say that my food habits have continued to improve and my skin and tummy are loving me for it! I have been making sure to have veggies with every meal, to drink more water/tea and to have fruit and nuts when I am at home instead of reaching for junk food to snack on. Sure, I still have the cheeky Malteaser or 6 at night, but life is about balance, right?
Overall I was extremely happy with the results of my 3 Day Juice Cleanse. It did exactly what I personally wanted, to let me understand what works for my body when it comes to food.
Please keep in mind, I am not a professional and this was my first cleanse, so I would definitely recommend getting in contact with the lovely people at Greene Street Juice Co to have a chat about what you wish to achieve and any concerns you may have before starting your cleanse. They were honestly so accommodating and supportive throughout the entire process. Can’t wait to cleanse again!
